Day 5 - LM (Closed and Expecting)

Floats waited quietly on the edge of the wastes, her hands tapping a light staccato on her tools.
"Hmmmm hmm I know it's up for me hmmm, If you steal my sunshine, hmmm hmm, Making sure I'm not in too deep, hmm hmm, If you steal my sunshine."

She was a little early to the meet but figured it was better than being late. In truth, the Nautolan was all sorts of fired up after he talk with Astin. She had to work a little harder and keep her promises. And that meant money, which meant scavenging. So she'd reached out to a friend and he'd talked to his friend and their friend seemed to be a nice native girl and Floats had sent her a message:

-----------
Heya!

Uh, Sloan said y'all was up for scavenging and what not? Uh, me too! I figure we can go to the wastes late morning and scavenge.
I ain't experienced, but I can bring sandwiches and beans. Look for the red Nautolan, that's me!

Oh, and I'm Floats! It rhymes with Boats so it's real easy to remember.

Hopefully see yah if you can make it!

Floats,

------------

With such an invite, who could resist?

Sinnya arrived... most likely by ship? Surely Vaya wouldn't mind if she appropriated the TBD (Twi'lek Boldly Delving?) for a little probably-not-dangerous scrap hauling.

"Hey. You must be, uh, Floats." She waved a little awkwardly as she approached.

On a planet with a substantial population of Twi'lek settlers, the skinny, blue-skinned Twi'lek in many-pocketed trousers, worn boots, and a heavy leather coat was utterly unremarkable, especially compared to a towering scarlet Nautolan. But she did have on an eclectic handful of Aznuri-style ornaments--necklaces and bracelets maybe--that made it easier to guess she might be Sloan's acquaintance.

Also, she was here, in the middle of nowhere on a giant junk heap.

"It's nice to be on a normal job again for once," she commented, looking... up at her partner for the morning.

"Howdy!" Floats fires off an enthusiastic waves as she stretches with a pop

"Sinnya? Sinn'ya, right? I just think it's the darnedest thing you get to do cool stuff like this for a normal job, bet you got all sorts of stories to tell. Everyone found any magical cubes?"
No harm in asking

"I asked a few folks and they said you're the lady to talk to about scavenging so I really appreciate you coming on down here."
She extends a hand, looking down with friendly enthusiasm

"Yeah, I'm Sinnya Tarr. Or, uh, Sinn'yatar if you can pronounce it. Either is fine." Since Floats was trying--and it was damned hard not to smile back--Sinnya gave the Rylothian pronunciation, though she knew from experience many Basic speakers struggled with it.

"Magical cubes?" She looked puzzled about that as she reflexively reached out to shake Floats' hand. "No... some archaeologists I came out with once found some weird things around here, though. The strangest painting... up to the day they went off-planet, they couldn't agree about whether it came from a royal tomb, or a hotel refresher. I had to break up a couple of fights."

She shook her head. "Archaeologists are odd birds."

"Huh! You ever think it was from a refresher in a royal tomb? Maybe the ancient people came by back then to pay respects?"
Floats stretches out her vocals
"Sinnyaater....Sinn'yaaater....Sinn'yata....Sinn'yatar! I think I can manage it. I got the same problem, parents called me 'Fathynyu'"
Its a very friendly handshake indeed before she looks over to the wastes

"So uh, how'd you do this? Do we just walk around or are there special spots you know?"

"Fath-thh..." Sinnya's tongue tripped over incisors that were clearly not designed to help pronounce Nautolan phonemes. Stupid carnivorous precursor species. "Fatynu? No, that's wrong..." After a few more attempts, she shrugged apologetically. "Uh... I'll keep working on it."

"I know a few places. Looking for anything special?" She began picking her way deeper into the ancient rubble, gesturing for Floats to follow. "In school we learned this used to be a city, before some war a really long time ago. My mother's people said the Sky Devils stole the Sun and rained fire on it, because it was ruled by a bandit chieftess who defied them." She shrugged. "That's probably a metaphor or something, though."

"A metaphor for a flood or something I bet! We got the same stories on Glee Anselm."
Floats follows on, doing her best not to keep her footing

"I know this'll sound real crass Sinnya, but I kinda need the credits, so if there's somewhere with real good pickings I'm all about it."
apologetically
"I ended up with some folk depending on me and you'd be surprised how hard it is to earn a living as a homeless boat mechanic."

Sinnya chuckled to herself, possibly sounding a little too world-weary for somebody who looked her age. "Don't worry about that. I know lots about needing credits. Sorry to hear about your... boat?, though. Whatever happened, I bet you didn't deserve it."

She scrambled atop a twisted lump of ancient metal to get her bearings from a slightly higher vantage point. "Okay. I know this place where there's a bunch of stuff that has to be computer equipment--or it was back in the before time, anyway. None of it works, but you can find rare metals in it if you know what to look for." She hopped down, then hesitated for a moment, biting her lip. "Stay sharp over there, though. We might not be the only scavengers."

"I got a wrench and if pressed I'll use it!"
Gladdened by Sinnya's broke solidarity Floats feels like this can only end well

"You just lead on and I can do any heavy lifting or pushing that needs. Suppose if there's something broke I can try and fix it, but unlikely to be a flotation device out here."

"If bunnies are here... they're the kind of bunnies that can look after themselves." Sinnya's sharp smile conveyed her wariness, but also some pleasure at the thrill. "Big game hunters from offplanet ask to come out here too, sometimes. Something about how the unusual habitat spices things up for them."

"Oh they do? Can't say I approve much of hunting for sport. Buncha Aqualish whalers tried to rent my boat a year or two back and I sent 'em packing. But then again, if the animal is coming right at you..."

The Nautolan looks again, a little worried
"Are we gettin' close?"

"Whales don't make it a fair fight, though." The implication seemed to be that whatever was out here... would. Possibly at least. "Anyway, keep your eyes open and we'll be fine. We're almost... Ha!"

She vaulted lightly over the crumbled low remains of a wall, into a space that could plausibly once have been a building. It was so thoroughly smashed and gutted that it would be hard to tell what it had once been used for--multiple storeys seemed to have collapsed downward, and debris had shifted over time--but even at first glance there were some visible bits and pieces that looked like casings for control panels and other electronic equipment.

"I knew I remembered the way," Sinnya grinned. "Well, here we are. Let's see if we can find something to keep the lights on in your... uh, boat?" She wasn't really clear in her mind about whether Floats actually lived in the famous boat, but it was clearly important either way!

“Awww. Ain’t you sweet thinking of my boat. In truth he really needs new anti-fouling or they’ll be suckers all over him like flies on shi-shiitake mushrooms. Flies love ‘em”

Claps her hands together and psyching herself up
“Okay, let’s do it!”

Whatever was happening, the brave pair were only sort of prepared...

D5 LA--Adventures of Blue and Red, Survival hard+setback. Boosts for gear and Floats's assist.: 2eP+1eA+2eB+3eD+1eS 4 failures, 2 advantage

((If this check is "navigation on a world" (finding places, going around hazards?) I'd cancel the setback, but that just means 1 extra advantage and still failure.))

It began with a rumble of the earth as they picked through what was probably a city perhaps? It was hard to tell but it burst from the ground and sludge and roared as it tore through ancient structures and the earth before submerging beneath the earth… it must have been a hundred meters in length maybe more…

And right now it was beneath them somewhere.

"Uhhh." Sinnya flinched and went a paler shade of blue. "Okay. I never saw that before."

Does Thing.jpg resemble any kind of creature Sinn might recognize, or is it totally novel?

“I can’t believe this... that thing, I really thought was just a metaphor.” Sinnya looked distinctly shaken. “Okay, so, my Ma’s people have a story about a terrible serpent that can swallow starships whole... and, uh, obviously beings smaller than ships, too. The story goes that when the ancestors and the, uh, their friends...” she glanced at Floats. Brother Sloan wouldn’t hang around with someone who’d carry tales to the Imperials, right? Besides, it seemed like the offworld Sith already knew something about this part of the Aznuri past. “The ancestors broke a curse on the forest, with help from the Jedi. This was thousands of years ago, of course. But they say all that evil took a living form and haunts the wastes of the planet.

“They say it eats almost anything, but some fruits are poisonous to it.”

The people call it the Curse that escaped, something born of the cursed lands thousands of years ago or so the legend say and it is filled with malice and evil and it can eat ships as easy as it can organic things... also it might be allergic to cram berries...
