Shadows of Bankor

Rannek had made an internal promise to climb up the stairs to see the kid every time he came to get in a good work-out... but the events of the day had been work-out enough in his estimation so he let himself take it easy and rode the elevator up.

He walked over to the home of the elderly woman and while it was late he wanted to see if she was still up.

The door is slightly ajar and inside the old togruta woman is sitting in a chair knitting and humming a song to herself. There sounds like a second person in the apartment as they seem to be having a conversation about mundane things.

He knocks on the door, "Excuse me... Miss?"

"Oh... hello no we don't want any hydrospoons," the old woman called out.

He chuckled inwardly and replied, "Nah not here for sales... It's the green guy from yesterday. The guy who came about Riala."

"Oh my word, please come in, come in! Can we offer you some tea?" she asked.

He walked in and nodded a greeting, "I'm good. Thank you though... I brought a little something for the kid. Finished off a job today and had some money..."

"What a kind young man!" She said.

He paused and asked, “How’s he doing?”

“He’s… doing well most of the time, he still does not fully understand but I make sure to bring him food and check on him many times throughout the day. There was an awful racket earlier, sounded like explosions coming from them strange tree folk, never know what they be up to,” she said.

“Thankfully Gibsy has his aunt to watch after him, she’s a sweet girl. Probably single, oh I was going to bring them some cookies but if you would like to, would spare these old bones a walk.”

“An aunt?” He asked.

“Sure. I’d be happy to.”

"Showed up this morning, nice girl," she said warmly. "Bless you young man and give Gibsy my best."

He nodded appreciatively and took the cookies before entering back into the hallway and walking over to the house in question.

The door was closed but he could hear murmurs of conversation or maybe music. It sounded like a kid's show.

He knocked on the door three times in a volume he hoped wasn’t too soft or loud.

"Hello there... uhh can I help you?" a woman answered.

“Yeah... sorry. My name’s Rannek. I don’t know if you heard or not but I’m the guy who came and let the Togruta lady know about your sister.”

He held up the cookies, “She made some cookies and I got something for the boy... wanted to check in on him.”

She looked at the cookies and then said, “Oh man cookies!” She grabbed the plate and stepped aside and said, “I really appreciate what you did for my sister. I could not believe it.”

“We were not close towards the end… I don’t even know why now,” she said. “Oh, call me Lyla, and I guess you know Gibs, he’s watching the same episode of Mr. HappyBoob for the twenty-fifth time in a row… the first five times it was riveting the tenth time got weird and now I just feel like Mr. HappyBoob is a dystopian thriller about being forced to be happy in a dark world of misery and pain. Like how can you be that happy all the time, unless someone is watching you and waiting for you show any hint of sadness.”

“Hey Gibs you got company,” she said flopping on the couch upside down and enjoying some cookies.

Gibsy looks at the man and waved before looking at his holo-show.

He chuckled a tiny bit at the woman’s commentary.

“If it’s that the show might be better training for real life than I thought...” He commented in a somewhat conflicted manner.

“I was glad to hear he had you to look after him... I was worried about him. I lost my parents to something similar and knew how tough it can be... the other lady was saying that he may not really understand what has happened... were you able to talk to him about it?”

She replied, “I think he is still coming to grips with it, the show must help or maybe he just likes it.”

“How’d she die, the old lady wasn’t really clear.”

“It’s somewhat sensitive I’d say... might not be a good thing to tell the kid... just make him mad at people who he shouldn’t get mad at...” He started.

“I’ll let you know and you can tell him someday if you think it alright...” He paused for a second.

“The imperial Inquisitor seemed to think she might have been connected with some Jedi or something... thought she wasn’t being helpful in finding him. I was brought in for questioning since I’m new here and shitty at writing paperwork... he was asking me about that Jedi dude and hurting your sister to intimidate me into talking.” He paused.

“I don’t know that Jedi dude at all... but he still killed your sister as a ‘lesson’ to show what happens to people who aren’t useful to him...”

“Well that is a bad time,” she said flatly.

“I think I will just say she is gone for now; he isn’t ready for that kind of brutal honesty. Sounds like you got lucky to survive the Inquisitor yourself. Gibs is okay for now, I let him eat ice cream and watch Mr. Boobhead or HappyBoob… whatever, and well I just let the kid be happy. I think he knows, but also it’s hard I guess.”

“But hey he has a cool adult friend… which sounds weird.”

“Let the kid be a kid as long as life lets him... I don’t know how long I’ll be around but I’ll help with anything he needs while I’m here.” He pulled out a necklace with a circular carved black stone.

“Picked this up for him... same color as his mother’s hair. Figured could be a way to remember her... keep her close to his ‘heart’ as it were...” he added.

“If he needs toys or educational stuff or food or something you let me know... I don’t know what your working situation is but I do some jobs here and there... I can help.”

Don’t say professional killer… well not professional more like groomed from a young age by your father to murder people… “Just a delivery girl.”

Delivering murder.

Damn it Daunt, did I catch Cannibal fever, is that how you become a cannibal? She repeated, “I deliver the things.”

Mmm delicious Daunt, “I think that is real nice of you, Rannek, you’re a sweet guy. I hope you don’t get murdered. That’s a real problem around here.”

“I hope so too... Not my favorite pastime.” He replied in a deadpanned way.

“Might not be a bad idea to move outta the city for a bit if you aren’t tied to a workplace... only been here a couple days but seems like things are heating up.”
