She took a deep breath and then said, “Look I know that you mean well, and I need that, I need people that give a damn. But there are three things I don’t need. You spoke about discipline, and we need that but I need that the most from people I think can lead, so if I tell them to knock it off they do it. No questions asked, just stop, get at me in private but knock it off then and there.”
“Two, not every idea someone gives needs a thorough response or a takedown of how bad it is especially in public, some people just want to be heard and feel like they are contributing. You can say nothing, you can say, that sounds great or even good idea but let’s talk about it later if you have concerns, break it down in private no reason to make someone feel like an idiot in public even if that isn’t the intent.”
She continued, “Finally, the only thing we have is morale is people, and negativity isn’t helping. They don’t need to know how the sausage is made, they don’t need to know what comes after the Op, I need them focused on doing the task I set before them, big picture isn’t a concern for them right now because big picture is BAD. Our situation is kriffed, and they know that, every person here knows that. We don’t have to remind them; they are looking to us to lead them. They know the score, trust them. You could be the best soldier in the galaxy but if your attitude is negative or you tear down morale I don’t need you… I’d rather have a bad plan and good folks then a good plan and no folks, you get me?”
“You’re solid, dedicated, and smart, but you don’t handle people well… that’s fine. We need a good pilot like you, but I need to know you understand what I am saying and not just looking to respond. We need you, but this is how it’s going to be, I keep it simple.”
She finished that with a drink and then reached for another.
