It's your turn to fly (LA, D6

Djanik wasn't going to let himself die without doing what he could.

Which meant he didn't have a ton of time - so he had to make use of what he had.

He had two leads he needed to follow up.

Settling his ship down in the same grassy valley he had fled to yesterday, hidden by the trees, he powered it down and toggled his comm link to his datapad.

Typing out two quick messages, he sent them, one after the other.

<Deliver to: Veras>
<Hey, I know things have been crazy yesterday - the Empire didn't get to you or your family, did they? Also, I wasn't sure, but I thought I could give you a chance to practice flying a little. I do have a ship we could use.>

<Deliver to: Maxxy>
<I hope you didn't have any trouble last night. If you are still interested in work, let me know. I will contact you as soon as something comes up. If you prefer, I can remove your number from my records - it isn't too late to choose the safe option.>

Maxxy replied: <I am still interested, just call me Rebel Intern #1>

Djanik smiled faintly.

<Deliver: Maxxy>
<Good. We'll be in touch soon.>

Setting the datapad down, he hoped it would be him contacting her, and not someone stepping in to replace him once he started attempting to eat faces.

There is a knock at the outside of the hatch.

Djanik paused, tapping the holster inside his uniform jacket, making sure the pistol was there. Then he slid down the ladder, past the bunks and kaff machine, landing on the floor of the living space with an audible metal thunk.

Then he tapped the access panel, opening the door.

"Hey old man, got your message," she offered.

"You wanted to go flying?"

"Old man?"

He laughed. "And you used to say I was only 25."

With a gentlemanly bow, he invited her to enter his craft, playing it up a little, like the old man he was.

"You, in fact, were the one who said she wanted to go flying. Yesterday, if I'm not mistaken?"

“I did… but I have a better idea, have you ever been out to Hang Man’s Lagoon? It’s about 400 km north along the coast, if you can keep up,” she gestured leaning in the doorway.

“I mean you’re not the only one with a ship.”

"I haven't been there."

Raising an eyebrow, he added, "You didn't say the ship was yours... and also finished."

"And that sounded an awful lot like a challenge."

"It's finished enough and it was a challenge," she offered. "You going to Pantoran up, or just lose by default."

"You have the advantage of knowing the finish line."

A wicked smile. "I have the advantage of a head start."

Turning, he started up the ladder with a speed surprising for such an old man.

As he climbed, perhaps she would see the black veins running up his neck. Perhaps not, if she were in a hurry back to her own ship.

Either way, as he ran the startup sequence, he checked the scanners to make sure she was clear before starting his engines.

She was clear.

Flicking the ignition, he lifted off, activating his scanners, he did a quick check to see if she had landed whatever she planned to fly nearby - it wouldn't do to take too much of a head start, after all... and he was curious what junker she'd been working on... probably newer than his ship, at least...

The fighter came screaming into view! it was sleek with a distinct blue paint scheme and a cartoon, stylized trandoshan on the side.

OOC: Chase rules, Djanik has a head start and is at Medium to Veras! make a simple Piloting Space check so roll with no difficulty and we compare results.

Flip a destiny for reasons for this scene.

Djanik did a double take.

He *knew* that model.

A lot of things tumbled into place.

Your 'dad' kept his ship, huh...

Then his feet pushed the throttle to the floor. She had a fast ship and he wasn't going to make this easy on her. It was the honor of the sky - you never go easy.

The pain that rippled up his body as he accelerated didn't help, but he tried to push through it. Still, he wasn't his best, and knew she was likely to leave him behind.

Listening to the whistle of the wind as it blew along the blast marks on the side of the hull, he wondered if this would be his last flight...

Maker, he hoped not.

He loved it, even though currently it lit half his body on fire as the G-forces pushed him back in his seat.

Veras smiled and gunned the engine as they are both weaving through the air… he was a great pilot, she needed to show him she could fly well too.

She called over the radio, “Nice flying!”

OOC: She moves to Short now of Djanik as they begin to navigate through a narrow river canyon! A setback to the next roll.

He laughed. "You're not bad - acting like you weren't already an expert."

Pumping the controls, he sent his patrol boat whistling into the canyon, weaving between rock formations just for the thrill of it. The hanging quarters of the ship creaked as they swung back and forth, each turn and sway rocking the kaff in his travel mug back and forth.

This was living. He hoped this was also good practice for Veras - if she could see his own techniques and learn anything, he'd be happy.

Veras laughed and then got serious, he was good so this meant she needed to use the home field advantage! She kicked the engines, made a barrel roll into a neighboring canyon and then opened up the thrust!

OOC: No change but she will use the Advantage difference of 4 swing through a neighboring chasm... a shortcut, she gets an upgrade due to the 4 advantage. 2 more rounds before they arrive.

She was good.

Kid had been gaslighting him yesterday.

Still, he didn't mind, and as he shot out the end of the canyon he dropped his altitude, skimming the ground barely 20 feet up. Zoning out the collision warning alerts, he slipped in between the trees, just because he could.

Then he pulled back the stick, gaining altitude, and a glorious view of the landscape stretching out about him - along with a view of the destination, in the distance.

Rolling out of the climb, he dived toward his end goal.

The ship was nimble fast as she joined with Djanik as they sped out over the water now the Lagoon coming into view!

OOC: They are now at Close, she uses Advantage to push it to the limit a boost die.

The race was coming to a close, and Djanik couldn't resist a final bit of sport.

Cranking the controls, he sent the ship on a long, rolling barrel roll, as he brought it in over the lagoon.

Then his ship came down gently on the repulorslifts, landing on sandy beach with a soft crunch, and he settled into his seat, awash in a mix of pain and joy.

What a rush that was.

Veras pulled out the win at the last moment, she was a natural talent... she needed time to mature but she was good.

Then Djanik's sensors picked up five inbound Imperial IFFs Tie Fighters.

OOC: Triumph for Djanik to catch the 5 Fighters coming in hot, giving them an upgrade on the first turn.

Captain Beck opened a line to Djanik and Veras and said, “You are in restricted Imperial space, make peace with your Maker.”

Captain Beck made final adjustments on her approach and then said on a secure line to her team, “Valkyrie Squadron, on approach to intercept… weapons free.”

OOC: They are coming in at Speed 2 and are currently at Long. Captain Beck is Nemesis 1, Minions are a group 4, they are all in Tie Fighters though Captains looks modified.

Djanik felt his veins begin to run a little cold.

TIE fighters.

Not now!

Punching his ship back into the air, he flicked his comms to Veras, "Veras! Get out of here - we've got company coming in hot!"

Then he switched to the open channel - "We didn't know, officer! We'll leave right away!"

Pressing the accelerators to the floor, he took his ship is a thin loop, trailing the hull along the water like an ice skater as he came about, before boosting back southward. (Move to accelerate to 1, action to accelerate to 2)

"Kaveen, I heard you had thrown in with the rebel scum... but to see it with my own eyes," she replied.

"Traitor."

Veras chimed in, "Is this an Ex?"

OOC: Combat begins with them at Medium at speed 2, Veras is at Speed 2 and Djanik at Speed 2; Beck is Nemesis 1 and the Minions are a group of 4.

Captain Beck accelerates by 1 for a Maneuver and then her action, and then move to Short of Djanik! Hero's turn.
