[D3 MM] Retrieval

Sacha returned to the compound unexpectedly. She had been planning to leave and hunt material until art and spending time with people later, but the foundlings always took precedence.

How was it this one hadn't? A Mandalorian was as a parent to their foundling. How had one gotten out of their sight?

She carried the boy's body carefully, with as much dignity as she could under the circumstances. Her own cloak was draped over his form to hide the desecration the predator had inflicted.

The Mandalorians look to Sacha and try to see what she carries.

She looked down at the bundle, voice quiet as she spoke. "We lost a foundling."

Horus pushed his way through the Mandalorians and said, “A foundling… lost to us.”

“Child of Ordo where did you find this wayward little one?” he then looked at the gathered Mandalorians and said, “Who was this one’s protector?”

Another Mandalorian said, “Kalu Viszla, but she has not returned from her hunt.”

"In the woods. He appeared to be the victim of a large, six-legged cat," she explained. Her tone was heavy with loss. The loss of a foundling was a heavy one.

She shifted him in her arms so she could bring out the dagger. "This was in the beast's stomach, as well."

Horus accepted the knife and said, “This is old, passed down for generations innumerable. If Kalu was parted from it, then some tragedy has befallen our sister. Did you find any sign of Kalu?”

She shook her head. "Not aside from that, but I was focused on retrieving the young one."

"Then we must look for her," Horus replied sharply.

She simply nodded in agreement, finding a respectful place for the body. There wasn't really a need for fanfare, just make sure her gear was ready to head back out. "Let's go, then."

She could also hope one of them was better at tracking than she was...

“See to the foundling, this loss hurts us all and it should be honored as such. Child of Ordo follow me,” he said as he rested the large hammer over his shoulder.

“Show me where the body was found.”

She nodded and headed out of the compound. She didn't expect Kalu Viszla to be alive, but she hoped. They didn't need more loss.

Horus knelt down and inspected the area before saying, “This way.”

“They must have come across a pack and the foundling ran but was already wounded. These creatures are dangerous in large numbers.”

OOC: He finds the trail.

She hummed in acknowledgment, unsheathing her sword. If there was a chance of encountering the rest of the pack, better to be ready.

“So, child of Ordo, why do you think it is important we find our wayward kin?” he asked as he followed the signs of the pack.

She thought for a moment. "... They're part of the tribe. Every member is part of our strength." I can think of other reasons, but we'll start with that.

"Is that all they are?" he asked as he ducked under a low branch.

"Should I only do what is right by you because you give me strength, Child of Ordo?"

"I think there's some of us out there who'd say yes," she mused, thinking back to some of the Death Watch she'd known. Strength above everything. The sort of mindset that led to some of their most dishonorable actions in the past. "No. It's... They're kin. If we can help them, we should. We should look out for each other. I can come up with reasons, but I'm not sure I have a better one than just that."

"That is all the reason anyone should need. We are warriors but we are also family, and that should be enough for any kin to do what is right," he responded before gesturing to what looked like a cave under a hillock.

"I count five by the signs."

"I need to stop overthinking things," she noted.

She looked. "Five including the one before, or are the signs more recent?"

"Five in the cave, a hunt leader and the rest of the pack," he responded.

"You are my second, we fight together if we must."

She nodded, gripping her weapon, bracing herself with determination. "Understood."

As they enter they smell the stench of death and they see the pack circling a corpse and a larger one feasting before they turn and growl at them. One approached slowly with a scar over the eye and hissed.

The rest of the pack fell in behind it preparing to attack but the hunt leader seems fixated on Sacha.

She was ready for the creatures to pounce, but the leader wasn't moving to do so yet. Focused on her. Why?

Stay calm!

She took a long, slow breath, watching the hunt leader carefully. She did her best to look like she wasn't a threat but not submissive, either. She wasn't moving to attack, either, waiting to see if it was waiting for the right moment or going to do something else.

She could... It was a hard thing to put her finger on, but she could feel the creature before her. Feel its aggression.

She was the dominant predator here, though, worse than it. She shifted her stance to look larger and more intimidating, then took her own fear of the danger and turned it against the creature, letting it feel that same pressure. It and its pack did not want to challenge something like her, surely. Back down.
