Aznuri Culture Thread

Post by Brother Sloan » Sun Jan 26, 2020 8:51 am

Thought it would be neat to keep track of little cultural tidbits we've come up. Creating a culture collaboratively is a really fascinating endeavor imo and I'd love to incorporate things that other players have come up with into my roleplaying. Please feel free to add to the list!

So far things that have come to mind that I've either read or written in

- Greet each other by touching foreheads
- Refer to non-Aznuri as "laowai"
- Strong connection to the force
- Interest in Jedi Legacy, are taught about them from a young age.

- Different tribe names

"We are all separate tribes, but we are also all one people." He began. "That is true of us as Aznuri, but also as Bankorians. Just as Aznuri society relies on Orosini, Uliji, Malawi and all the other tribes to function effectively, so does the delicate balance of this world rely on the talents and people of it's own tribes to survive and thrive."

“It’s an old story to a time when Bankor had many cities and people, before there was Aznuri, just those who would become Aznuri. There was great war, we call them the Sky Devils… I believe the word in your tongue is Mand-alorius? Something like that, they came and brought war,” Hulia explained.

“Those that would become Aznuri were split into three, the tribes of the Cursed lands, those who kept true and those sought to serve the Sky Devils. The Cursed lands were a dark place and from it dark and twisted things came it was the lair of the Darkness, a Sith evil.”

“The Repiublic and Jedi come to Bankor and fight the Sky Devils and they come to our lands and help our people become united, drive out the Sky Devils and then the Jedi came and cleansed the Cursed lands, this was our birth this is the Calm,” she makes a warding sign and smiles warmly.

“The Calm is where the ancestors go along the River, they rest and guide us, Peacewalkers commune with them, they are of all the tribes and all tribes end up in the Calm. The Jedi were friends and we learned from them, they from us but soon the Jedi never came back, we do not know. Bankor has been vibrant world, wild place and now this, many times over the history of the people but we remain and endure and have protected the Calm,” she finished.

“So yes we know the Jedi, or maybe we knew the Jedi.”

lol...

I haven't made up much yet but I'm glad to have this thread!

I did throw in the detail that ornaments like jewelry are somewhat distinctive in style from one tribe to the next, in ways that could be identified by a knowledgeable person.

“The Chaldi would know they are very much keepers of the old ways, but they are also slow to trust. I am not Chaldi though my family has roots there. They would have what you seek and may even meet with you. Who can say, but they are the keepers of such things,” she honestly.

“I learned of such things from the elders and keepers of tales, we keep stories and pass them down, some in word others by story, but we remember.”

I improvised “skycursed” as an especially nasty swear word and imagined it probably coming from Sinnya’s Ma (to go with the legends about Sky Devils and so on).

I also invented a native forest animal called a “visybara” which turned out to be a sort of... oversized, shaggy, six-legged platypus? May have got carried away there. :D

Some geography. Reference points are with regards to the location of the Chaldi

"Nearest to those cliffs..." Sinnya swiveled her pilot's chair to and fro as she thought, possibly annoying anyone who might be annoyed by such things. "North are the Skull Eaters. That is, they call themselves the Yukitzi, but everyone else says Skull Eaters. They got the name because, well." She shrugged. "You don't want to get in a raiding war with them if you've got a problem being part of dinner. But they don't really fight more than anybody else."

She stopped swiveling and gestured palm up with her right hand, a clear and on the other side... gesture. "Southeast are the Hbanu. They used to be the same as the Chaldi, people say, but they're a separate tribe now, with a village in the trees instead of on the cliffs. They usually get on with Chaldi people, but with how things seem to be in the Chaldi place now..." she chewed her lip for a moment. "The Hbanu kept the Chaldi custom of breeding swoopwings. Hardly any other tribes do."

Hbanu Impact Bow: Skill - Ranged Heavy; Dam +5, Crit 3; Range Medium; Encum 4, HP 2; Price (R) 2000, Rarity 8; Special - Pierce 3, Unwieldy 3, Blast 5

The Aznuri are wary of technology but not adverse and some tribes embrace it, the Hbanu have done so for these weapons built of a hardened wood and specially prepared wax, tough as modern metals and quite flexible this compound bow can deliver a powerful strike with specially treated arrows that explode on contact! Rare outside the Hbanu some of the other tribes have started to employ these but the Hbanu make the most use of them. The weapons can be folded up for easier carrying.
