Fire and Ice (EE D4)

[Djanik]

Djanik was happy.

His ship, not yet christened, freshly dried white and red paint on freshly welded deck plates, flew through frigid winds toward their destination. With one hand on the antique wood paneled flight stick, thumb feeling the texture of the faded gold '15' medallion, he took a deep breath, enjoying the smell of freshly oiled leather, metal, and the kaff scented air freshener he'd hung from the navicomputer.

The hum of the engines vibrating the deck plating, the gentle push and pull of the wind... it felt like home.

Djanik was happy.

The ship, it's form somewhere between a T and a Y, was hardly aerodynamic, but it had enough raw punch in those engines to carve through the sky like one of his old V19 Torrents, and the profile wasn't even all that different.

Behind him, he hoped his passengers were having as much fun as he was, heading out on this little venture.

The nemoidian was far from comfortable but at least he did not have to stand all the way to the ice shelves.

Still he would appreciate if there was not so many occurences of him having his head dashed against low-hanging pipes and system parts.

''Are we there yet?''

Djanik, still surprised that the neimodian wasn't the one who ended up with the second chair, called back. "Almost - would've been nice to have more precise co-ordinates, but I'm scanning now to see what I can pick up."

And fortunately, the scanners on this particular little ship, freshly re-wired, were quite strong.

Pinging the ice shelf, he looked for two things - a safe place to land, where the ice was thick enough to hold, and their final destination.

He was hoping he could get the two things reasonably close to each other.

Jabber had chosen to hide out in the steerage, knowing that it was the only thing allowing him to resist the urge to mircomanage the pilot.

He knows what he's doing...

"Are we there yet?" He chatters over his commlink

''It would not be a secret enclave if we could accurately pinpoint it'' he replied

''You all brought thermal cloaks...right?''

The conditions were near white out.

Far from ideal.

Luckily, the ship was warm.

Djanik was flying by scanners, almost exclusively.

Still, the ship had a powerful (Long range) suite, so in theory, he should get some sort of response indicating a droid foundry, or depot, or whatever was out here. If he could just get them within a few kilometers, it might be reachable, otherwise they'd have to wait out the storm, and he wasn't sure how long that would take.

"I've got my own cold weather gear, yes, I could lend someone the thermal cloak if need be - I don't mind the cold so much."

"We might need to do the rest on foot" Bowze commented

"Unless you want me to tamper with your scanners"

[Djanik]

"I'm just trying to set us down somewhere within walking distance - if it's too far we risk losing both the objective and the ship, and then freezing to death."

He knew a bit about how bad this kind of storm could be.

"If you want to check scanners, you might know better what we are looking for."

[Dapper Dog]

Djanik has a solid read on some kind of structure.

It was as good a place to start as any.

Settling his hands on the controls, he hoped against hope that he hadn't built a ship only to immediately crash it again.

Feathering the engines, he drifted them in at an angle, letting the wind work with him, and not against him.

Soon he was sliding the ship to a stop on the ice, as close as he could, and then tapping the landing spikes to extend downward, punching into the ice and holding the ship steady.

"Gentlebeings, we have arrived."

[Jabber]

"Oh, thank for Force. We're here." Jabber shoves out the door from the cargo hold, immediately shivering as the cold hits him.

"Oh, that nips! Why couldn't it be a desert?!"

Jabber trundles along with the others, chittering to himself under his breath

It was not the kind of weather where he would turn the ship off - he needed it running so it would stay warm, and the engines wouldn't freeze over. Tying the comms from his ship into his commlink, he set them so he could ping the ship to use as a waypoint if need be in the snow.

Djanik pulled a thermal blanket from his crash survival kit, passing it to the Jawa.

"Don't forget yours, next time. "

Glancing at the Neimodian, he gestured to the ramp. "After you, Bowze."

[Jabber]

Jabber holds up his thermal blanket.

"Oh I have it, it's just still so cold that it would freeze the testicles off a bantha. I hope this is worth it." Jabber looks over at the site up ahead. "It' doesn't look like much, but maybe that was the point"

[Djanik]

"Eh, I kind of like this weather."

It was absolutely refreshing after Rygor.

[Vaya Mer'darrow]

Vaya had claimed the only non-pilot seat, presumptively; although she could offer help on the scanners, if she had access to a console. She also brought a crash pack with her, thermal cloak included.

"This place sucks!" she shouted. "This whole kriffing planet's either too hot or too cold!" She showed up in a bad mood -- apparently she had had another trip planned, that had been delayed first by "assorted poodoo" and then the earthquake. She insists that she has to get back for her new departure time -- no overnighting at whatever they find.

She orients with the survival gear from her pack and the sensor data from the ship...

''Allright then''

The nemoidian fastened his thermal cloak on was about to be engulfed by the blizzard before stopping himself.

''Anyone got a rope? we don't want to get separated in this weather.''

[Djanik]

Djanik nodded, unspooling a length of cord.

"Survival kit covers it - if you have a glowstick, that wouldn't hurt either. Also, sync your comm links to my channel - you don't want to be out of touch."

Glancing between them, he added, "Ready?"

[Bowze Coppa]

''I have a fusion lantern'' he said putting the channels in sync and tying ropes between all of them ''Should be enough''

he looked ahead, resolved

''Let's go''

[Vaya Mer'darrow]

Vaya bundled up her antennapalps under her hood. "Ready," she said, sounding muffled and grumpy.

[Djanik]

"Right. Let's get moving."

Djanik set off, being naturally resistant to the cold, it meant the blizzard gave him less trouble than the others, and he could serve as a wind breaker for the others.

Eyes fixed on his comm link and the link with his ship sensors, he tried to keep on as close to a straight line to the structure as he could.

Thanks to Djanik they are not far from the access point for the entrance which seems to be covered in snow and ice but there is an access panel. At a distance it looks like a hill but it was probably a bunker or hangar.

Bowze moved towards the access panel and inspected it to make sure it was still useable .

It was frozen over but usable if it had power.

Bowze got his fusion lantern out, something he bought for something like this.

He pulled the wires and, after getting some ice out, plugged then in. Hopefully that would be enough to power the door.
