[D4EM] Pre-trip essentials

[Vaya Mer'darrow]

The sun was only just up. Vaya had the whole day ahead of her. She didn't know yet that she had a morning of rising frustration as she failed to get her ship in good enough condition to leave, while simultaneously having permission to do so, or that a literal natural disaster would further push back her dearly-desired expedition. Right then, she just had eager anticipation and alert antennapalps as she went out for what she foolishly thought of as a last minute supply run, moving with purpose through a market already halfway to bustling.

After stopping by the bounty hunter office to pick up some more holo-pucks, Venator decides to go check out speeder rentals. He notices a familiar face in the crowd and approaches the pair of ladies. "Morn'n lil ladies. Oud shopp'n before high noon?" He tilts his helmet in their direction.

"Do ya wanna hand wid da lil lady?" He offers to assist carrying with the metal boxes.

"I saw yer head thingies and thought I'd give you a holla!"

"Antennapalps,” Vaya supplied helpfully, giving a genuine smile. “Nice to see you, Fathynyu.” She said the name like someone practiced at sounding out unfamiliar languages.

"Do ya wanna hand wid da lil lady?" He offers to assist carrying with the metal boxes.

Vaya looked up at Venator, and then another five centimeters up at Fathynyu. Her pre-caf brain thought of several things to say, and fortunately her pre-caf tongue didn't get to them before she decided not to.

I don’t know how they measure height on Mandalore, but…

She juggles her boxes into one hand and extends the other to Venator
"Nice to meet yah Mr Venator. So you drove a boat and you're from Mandalore? That's almost as cool as the antennapalps!"
She tries to smile through her boxes
"Doing some breakfast shopping Vaya? You look right busy."

Vaya blinked at Floats. Having composed several coherent and verbalized thoughts in a row, she still wasn't ready to do more. She felt like one of those silicate life forms that perceived time differently, with Floats playing the part of the bafflingly fast organic creature. She looked at her hands. One held a stylus, the other a refurbished datapad. Neither held caf.

"Not breakfast," she protested. "Just shopping. Liftoff today. Have to be ready." Her stomach felt the particular kind of empty that went along with sleep deprivation.

Vaya looked down at her datapad. When her head tilted down, her antennapalps maintained their orientation, one pointed at Floats, one at Venator. She realized that she wasn't processing the words on the screen very well.

"... yeeeeesssss," she said slowly. "Caf."

Venator accepts the hand and shakes it. "Pleasure meed'n ya Fadhynyu. Imma down for hav'n a cup of jove."

She seems to have the boxes well in hand so he follows along.

Vaya led them to a favored spot mostly on muscle memory. It was a hole-in-the-wall cafe whose preferred preparation resulted in tiny cups of thick, bitter caf. You could get a more standard kind of order, but the Toydarian proprietor would mutter darkly about it, to the point where maybe you wondered if he was going to poison you.

Watching her find a place to put them in the awning-covered seating area, she finally thought to ask Fathynyu “What’s in the boxes?”

"Just essentials for the ship, grease, spanners, knick-nacks, some underwear that was on sale. You think men's sizes work the same? Oh, and a couple posters for the common area, add some colour."

Vaya blinked, her brain slowly coming online. Not fast enough to come up with a good response about the discount undergarments, though; she let that one pass untouched.

"Oh, uh, sorry?" She looked around, keenly aware of Venator, the other customers, the Toydarian. Dammit, had Petrus and Jenna not meant her to spread it around? But Floats'd talked about it freely enough... She also leaned in. "What do you mean, secret?"

She whacks a fist down on the table. So secret!

Venator nods. "Radher impressive. Imma look'n indo gedding my own ride soon."

He looks over at Vaya. "Wha'boud ya Vaya?"

Vaya's brain continued to accelerate quickly, and she offered Venator a polite smile. With bounty hunters, it was hard to tell "small talk" from "gathering information on potential targets." She didn't presume doing one score together made them friends.

"I've never felt attached to the idea of having my own ship," she said. "A ship is a tool to get you places. Buy a ticket, rent, own? Whatever works to get you there." She shrugged. "I understand the appeal in theory of the boundless freedom of the stars. But keeping a ship in working order is all the joys of owning real estate plus owning a speeder." She speaks like she's suffering from recent experience.

Venator nods. "Drade off for sure. Dhough really useful for me when acquisishions hide oud in hard da reach places."

"Yeah... acquisitions." Like me or any number of people I know, if we get unlucky. She tried to triangulate a polite, interesting, pleasant conversation that didn't draw Floats in to any unwise revelations. "Tell me, Fathynyu!" she said brightly at last, "If you could have anything for dinner tonight, what would you eat?"

"Yeah... acquisitions." Like me or any number of people I know, if we get unlucky. She tried to triangulate a polite, interesting, pleasant conversation that didn't draw Floats in to any unwise revelations. "Tell me, Fathynyu!" she said brightly at last, "If you could have anything for dinner tonight, what would you eat?"

"Home fried tuna, some of my speciaul beans and a cool glass of iced tea! You know, same as anyone."

"Is da a local speciady? I like sweed dea myself." Venator comments.
