Or in this case, stuck fussing over your gun.

She had spread out the tool kit she borrowed from Petrus, and was doing maintaince on her blaster. Sitting on the floor with her legs crossed, Dove almost found it a meditative state in going through the motions of caring for her weapons. It had been getting some upgrades this past week, but... maybe it was time to make some fine-tuned adjustments?

Vaya was no stranger to procrastination, which she usually viewed through the lens of prioritization. If she went out to see this show live tonight, that was a much more efficient use of her time than writing a paper. The band would be off-planet tomorrow, but the paper would still be there.

If she was being honest with herself (she was not) she would be able to admit that today had more to do with her amygdala than her prefrontal cortex. Despite living semiadjacent for… years? Dove was still an intimidating mystery. It was a breakthrough for Vaya to casually say to her, “Hey, want to hang out some time.” In the moment, she had in fact overcompensated by saying she would bring something to eat.

Which then meant she had had to ask Petrus what Dove liked without him offering any commentary. Then she had had to budget time in to her morning to get something both nice and fresh. Then she had to budget time in to shower after getting back with the dumplings, because it was sweltering outside.

Wow, you’ll sure look stupid if you’re late to something four meters from your apartment door.

She ended up being early, which seemed overeager, so she went back to her apartment to kill ten more minutes so she could be a normal sapient amount of late.

“I brought dumplings,” she said, and then followed up with a more normal sapient greeting. “Uh, good morning, hello.”

Looking over the array of implements, she smiled, and said, “Working on something? I had a field guide on a dig once who tried to Tibanna-jack his hunting blaster and, fun fact, the heat tolerance of the metal they use for leads to the power pack contracts slightly on worlds with a higher-than-average nitrogen atmosphere… uh, anyway, on Bankor you should be fine.”

"Oooh, dumplings!" The blonde perked up excitedly at the sound of that. "And a good morning to you too, Doc."

She gave a curious look to her weapon, digesting what Vaya was saying. "Heh, doesn't sound like something to worry about here on Bankor," Dove grinned, "but that's a good thing to remember, Doc. You are just a lovely treasure trove of ideas and trivia, aren't you?"

Vaya gave a small smile, setting the dumplings down within reach of Dove's workspace and perching on the armrest of a chair to Dove's side. She frowned briefly as her sharp eyes noticed some spackled-over... blaster burns? In the wall by the doorway. Well, it is a rough neighborhood. I think my apartment has some of those too.

"Well, that's what ten years of Core world University education gets you," she said, with a weak laugh. "I guess Petrus probably mentioned that..." she trailed off. What did Petrus say about her to anyone? She's silent as she considers and discards conversational staples like weather (boring, hot), Dove's schooling (potentially come off as snobbish, also the answer might be "subliminally-imprinted memetic uploads after I was decanted"), and why she had such a nice blaster (Vaya was pretty sure this was a neither ask nor tell sort of situation).

"So, I just gotta know," she said without thinking any harder, "what do you really think of Warrior's Heart?"

It did look like a fancy blaster. No recognizable design or markings that would give away its origins, much like its owner. For someone as knowledgeable as Vaya, there were those recognizable hints of Dove's Arkanian heritage, specifically as an Off-shoot, but the woman still managed to blend and change her mannerisms and speech-pattern so often it was hard to pinpoint where she might actually originate from. Sometimes she had the posh accent of a Tionese lady, and other times she could've blended in with the street-rats of Coruscant.

"Warrior's Heart..." she paused in her work, chuckling as she reached for a dumpling. "You know, I actually think it's entertaining. In a very dumb and cheesy way. Is it realistic? Kriff no! But is it dumb, action-packed, and brimming with so much cheese that even a Hutt would get a cardiac arrest? Absolutely."

Dove flashed Vaya a bright grin. "Galaxy needs stupid escapism fun like that." Then she sank her teeth into the meat-filled dumpling.

Vaya nodded, on firm ground. "Petrus especially. The first time I watched it, I had too much fun pointing out how fractally wrong it was, he thought I didn't like it. Kid took it kinda hard." That was not long after they'd come to Bankor, and Petrus hadn't even reached his second decade. "I think he's, uh, reached a better place lately."

"Mm," she nodded and reached up to rub her neck, while her cheek was momentarily stuff with dumpling. A short few seconds later, it had been chewed and swallowed. "He seems to be doing better yeah... poor kid. You know, I always felt it kind of wrong how they sent them out to war like that - they were just teens and kids."

Dove sighed and reached for another dumpling, but didn't quite bite into it yet.

"Having people like you around him has been good though. Keeps him grounded. Gives him normalcy."

"Yeah..." Vaya hesitated, but decided that it was if she was too fussy about what topics constituted picayune or prying, she'd quickly out of things to talk about.

"You know, I don't think I ever learned what brought you to this rusted out backwater. You seem pretty..." sophisticated cool badass "...more like an ecumenopolis type. That's a compliment," she clarified.

The compliment made her laugh a little. "A city-slicker? Yeah, that's pretty spot on for me." Dove regarded the dumpling in her hand for a moment. "Sure, it's a backwater world. Not horribly so, as I've seen worse, but... worlds like this got their uses. It's a great place to lay low, rest, recover."

Shrugging, she looked over Vaya. "It used to be better at least for those things before the Imperial presence got really crazy here. Inquisitors and all. Now... I wouldn't be surprised if the Empire wants to turn it into a labor-camp world of sorts." Her look now became more curious. "But what brings Doc to a backwater world like this?"

Vaya shrugged. "Well, I don't know if Petrus told you, but he and Jenna are actually the bastard children of a highly placed Serrenian noble, on the run and in hiding, and I'm their governess." She held a finger to her lips. "Don't tell anyone."

"Oooh," she seemed to go along with the little ruse. "Interesting. Which noble then, if I may ask? As it so happens, I once had a Serrenian count as my lover for a few months."

Not that Dove actually had had an affair with a certain Serrenian count, or a Serrenian count at all. At least not that she knew.

"I'm concerned about the lack of discipline in the children then... Petrus is running around kissing girls these days - no shame at all." Dove tutted with a shake of her head.

Vaya slid toward Dove, finally relaxing enough into the conversation to move from perching on the arm of a chair to sitting on the edge of it. It was a little like watching a wild bird hop closer to offered seed.

"Kissing! Scandalous. He won't admit any such thing to me. I thought the guests at his last party might be some sort of clue."

"Mm," she nodded to confirm Vaya's hypothesis, as her mouth was now full of dumpling again. Another round of chewing and swalloing. "You're on the right track there, Doc. It was certainly one of the girls present for the Warrior's Heart-viewing - so which one do you think it is?"

"Well, not the tiny child, thank the Maker," said Vaya. "I really would have to speak with him about that." She rubbed her chin. "Honestly I was enjoying myself too much to really pry. The Mandalorian and Fathynyu stayed after, but I think that was innocent. Hard to imagine how that might have gone with Sacha, anyway." She lightly bonked herself on the forehead with her fist, as if against a helmeted head. "And Fathynyu does, uh, not operate on that wavelength, I think."

"Jenna and I are out. That leaves..." she tapped her cheek thoughtfully, sending her mind back almost a month. "You're out of his league," she said, very casually, just to get it out of the way, and then moved on quickly to, "I think I'd know if it was anyone in the building, really, so that rules out Mia. And Sloan was lovely, but not his type, unless I've misread him badly." She raises her eyebrows at Dove. "And he's such a goody-goody, and she sat next to him, didn't she? He always comes back so irritatingly pleased from that soup kitchen. I knew he couldn't be made that happy by charity work!"

It was like listening to the culmination of a crime or mystery novel, where the plucky investigator had gathered everyone to present their case and findings. Such a shame that this was an audience of one, but Dove did pay great attention to the Balosar.

"Oh, you're good at this. Remind me to drag you along into some of my schemes sometime in the future, Doc," she grinned widely, almost breaking out into an applause. "But that's a bingo! And you're right! Charity work shouldn't make anyone that happy."

She paused, and her lips pursed as a thoughtful expression came over her. "... Think he ever got the talk, back at uh... school? You know, the birds and the bees...?"

Vaya basked in Dove's attention and approval, and grinned back. She sat more comfortably on the chair, less perched, but still leaned forward towards her, and started gesticulating as she talked with both hands and antennapalps.

"You mean the Academy?" That was part of the secret Karath family cant. "They got basic xenobiology. Pretty good all-around education, honestly.

"But they didn't all used to be so, uh, disciplined, can you believe that? Thousands of years ago they had husbands and wives and kids and everything. Out in the open, I mean," she said, waving a hand. "Any group that size running for that long is bound to have few secret marriages and kids, whatever the rules say."

"So I've been told, but I got my doubts about the level of education they actually get. I mean, Petrus seems to believe in a lot of that nonsense from Warrior's Heart," Dove chuckled warmly and gave a shake of her head, clearly amused that what used to be the most powerful mystical group in the Galaxy seemed to have so little connection to the real world.

"Huh." Now that was interesting. "I don't doubt it. The secret marriages and secret kids, that is. Despite how disciplined they might've been, they can't deny they're living beings. At least most of them. It's kind of hard-wired into the brains of most living things to want to procreate."

Vaya shrugged. "You can go too far with the hard-wired stuff. For me, I think the more fundamental law of the universe is deviance." She made a gesture with her hands, one going straight up, one wiggling. "Law of large numbers says, through enough generations, you get mutation and variation. Equally true about genetics and memetics and star systems. Plenty of it's non-viable, plenty of it gets detected and squished," she made a pinching gesture with thumb and forefinger, "but again, given enough iterations, it'll happen." She gave a cynical smirk. "There's no fundamental biological urge to have piles and piles of credits, but I'm sure the J- the Academy had to hush up as many scandals about slipping a hand in the till," she made a gesture as if accessing a cred-stick, "as slipping a whatever into a whatever." The second gesture was much ruder, learned in the Balosar slums. She became suddenly self-conscious of it, dropping her hands and ready to respond to the slightest hint of taken-abackness with "Uh, beg your pardon."

There was deep contemplation in eating dumplings and listening to Vaya's theory. As well as colorful expressions. The last one made her snort a laugh. "Slip a whatever into a whatever? Oh my, such crude language, Doc! I can hardly believe my delicate female ears... I'll have you know I'm an upstanding lady of decorum." This was of course said in the most snobbish Tionese accent she could muster, even if the facade was broken a few seconds later by a bursting laughter.

"Sorry, sorry. Really, no need to be shy around me. I've heard much worse, probably. Arkania is a pretty proper place in many ways, but it's been quite some years since I was last there and I've seen enough of the galaxy's shady underbelly to not be disturbed by some foul talk. As long as we don't use that kind of language around the kids, of course." Dove had to be a responsible 'mother' for Petrus, after all.

Vaya grinned back, relieved. "Well, as their governess, I of course take great interest in their moral development."

"Arkania... I know about it, but it hasn't been prominent in my field for a while." By which she meant, weird mystical force traditions had largely passed it by, since long pre-Ruusan. "I thought Balosar was the worst possible place," she said, casually glossing over whatever it was that caused her to come to that judgment, "and got out as quickly as possible. Would you like to go back, all other things being equal?"

"Go back to Arkania?" That was a question she didn't really hear all that often, so it gave her some pause. "... I guess? Maybe? I don't feel any special connection to it, but... there are some pretty sights there. And I miss some cooler temperatures than Rygor's. If there's a place I wanna go back to it would be Tion. Now that is a pretty place."

Dove sighed wistfully at the memores. "I wonder what it's like there now. Haven't been there since the end of the war."

Vaya clapped her hands together softly and grinned. "The Tion cluster! Every first-year Archaeology student for the last twenty thousand years spends at least a few nights sitting at the ol' Wookiee holotable, if you know what I mean, at the thought of finding one of Xim's troves." Well, Dove had said she was used to salty language. "As my career developed my research was more about monks and less about warlords, sadly, so I've never been."

"Hah," she laughed. "Did you know there's even some theme parks that have rides and attractions built around Xim? They're mostly meant for kids, of course."

She fixed Vaya with an amused smile. "Personally I don't think there's any trove or treasure to find - that it was all just one big final ruse from the ol' Despot. But what made you focus on monks and mystical mumbo-jumbo over treasure troves and warlords, Doc?"
