He picked another piece

''What's the use of being happy if everyone else is miserable?''

"I mean I guess that makes sense but you ever do anything because you enjoy it?" she offered.

''I enjoy shumai'' he offered ''But for the rest...I have done too much wrong to too many people to request the priviledge of contentement.''

He put his chopsticks down and picked up a glass of water, staring at it

''I sought to forget but that did not stop people from suffering.''

"You were general what did you expect?" she offered.

''I expected we fought for peace, I expected we could wage a clean and humane war with no civilian casualties.'' he looked down ''I expected we were right. I was certain of it.''

He closed the box

''That certitude cost us, cost the galaxy greatly.'' he returned his gaze to her ''Certainty blinded me to what I might have seen otherwise.''
