Something Sketchy here (D7 EM)

[Qareme Torth]

Qareme was slightly confused by the sudden turn of lesson, but did not question it. She did as instructed, studying Delia.

There is something about this woman that feels...different. I cannot put my finger on what though.

[Petrus Karath]

"Okay, the key is getting the proportions right." Petrus began, leading off the lesson. "We can't just go up and measure her... I mean, I guess we could, but that's not really done. So use her head as a comparison as you're sketching."

He began to work himself. "Start with an outline. Clothes are tricky, but it's okay, just do the best you can." He wasn't about to ask Delia to strip, after all!

[Neela Takee]

Neela followed along, "I never really considered all of this going into art."

[Petrus Karath]

He nodded slowly to Neela. "People think of art as coming from inspiration, and instinct. But there is a strong technical component, too. In that way, it's not so unlike how Jedi are supposed to do things, right? Instincts lead by conscious thought."

He looked back at Delia, smiling again, as he continued his own sketch.

Even though she could see the correlation it was obviously not coming as easy as she expected.

Petrus looked over at Neela's work. "Just so long as you get the proportions right, it's okay to be a little vague. We want to get the feel of Delia. So don't sweat it too much, huh? This is just for... meditation, in a way."

He gave her a nod, although he didn't quite smile. "You're doing well, Neela." He said.

Neela's work was just above a recognizable stick figure... she is trying but she also seems a bit distracted and fussing over everything being just perfect and since it isn't she isn't making much progress.

[Petrus Karath]

After a bit of time, Petrus moved over to sit next to Neela. "Here, try this." Holding up his paper, he made a series of vague lines, slowly taking shape as Delia's arm. "We just want to get the impression of her. The feel, maybe. Focus less on the details, more on what feels right."

He tilted his head, regarding her. "Or is something on your mind?"

"No, just a little tired," she said regaining focus and following what Petrus was doing.

"This is harder than I expected."

[Petrus Karath]

Petrus gave her a gentle nod. "Try to relax. Think of it like meditating. Hmmm. In fact, why don't you try breathing as you do when you meditate. Peacefully." He added.

That was an interesting question. Did Dark Side Force users meditate? If so, how? Perhaps doing it the right way, the Jedi way, would help her. Petrus kept a sidelong eye on her as he worked.

She put the pad down to focus on meditation and closed her eyes focusing on her breathing.

From Qareme's side, she hadn't started to sketch at all. She had spent the time studying Delia's form, her pencil not having even touched the paper yet. Eventually she began, kind of drawing lines to make a more box-like shape for the clothes, the arms and a circle for the head. It looked....awful.

[Petrus Karath]

She put the pad down to focus on meditation and closed her eyes focusing on her breathing.

Petrus watched her for a few moments. "Whenever you're ready, we can try again." He said gently.

He moved over to Qareme, smiling gently as he saw her attempt. "Try to add a bit more form. It's good to be able to see shapes, but the shapes aren't really Delia, y'know?"

Qareme paused, looking at Petrus curiously before looking back at the drawing.

"Form? So less edges, more...form" she repeated, placing the paper down and beginning again. Drawing the same squares, but curving the points rather than leaving them as pointy.

"It's a start." Petrus said with an encouraging smile. "The main thing is to keep at it. And enjoy yourself. Relax."

Petrus continued his own work. "How are you feeling, Delia. Comfortable?"

[Delia]

"I am fine, my job is easy, not the first time I have played model or muse," she joked.

[Petrus Karath]

"Oh yeah?" Petrus smiled at her, even as he continued to work. "Something like this? Or something else? Song? Epic poem?" He joked.

[Delia]

"Poetry mostly, bad poetry but poetry all the same," she said.

[Petrus Karath]

Petrus chuckled. "Well hey, if at least some of it was good, that's something, right."

He looked around at the others. "Back when I did this more, I did it a lot. And a lot of it wasn't good. But some of it was, and that's good enough. Uh, if that makes sense."

[Qareme Torth]

"Art is difficult to describe" Qareme commented as she paused in her awful work again "there is more to it than I had thought, and it is more difficult than I expected."

[Petrus Karath]

"There's a lot to it, yeah." Petrus agreed. "You can study for years if you want; there's academies and stuff in places like Alderaan."

He shrugged. "But if you find something you like doing, you can just practice it, and that's good enough." His lips twisted. "I mean, I'm not really all that good myself. I used to be better, but I'm out of practice."
