[Day 8 - EM] The Jedi Trials
Jedi Trials
Event Type: Jedi Trial
Participants: Petrus, Xanna, Qareme, Verse, and Fathynyu
Timeslots: Early Morning
Description: There are five tests, Test of Skill, Test of Courage, Test of Spirit, Test of Flesh, and Test of Insight; each test is done in order and the padawan is expected to face them alone. Jedi Master Surro administers the tests in the Temple.
Destiny Use: Using 1 Destiny for each player in the final check of Trial of Skill and 1 for each player in the final check of Trial of the Spirit. Total of 10.
Rules: The Jedi must achieve a total of 6 Trial points to complete the trials and must complete the all of the Trials no matter their score or outcome. 2 Advantage can be used to grant a boost die to their next roll, and every 2 Threat will be used to grant a setback to their next roll; in addition 4 Advantage can be used to gain a Trial point, success or Fail while 4 Threat will generate 4 strain instead. a Triumph will grant an additional Trial point success or fail, while a Despair will grant 2 Conflict and 2 more strain as the young Jedi gives into their Fear and Anger.
If a Force Die is committed, it is committed for the entire Test,i.e. if Enhance is used then it is committed for the entire portion of the Test of Skill. This means that that if they have Force Rating of 1 and even if they have Move they would need to do the harder version of the levitation test because they don't have a Force die to use Move.
Trial of Skill: The Jedi must demonstrate their Skill first with a display of Coordination or Athletics at Average with a setback due to distractions from roving droids shooting stun blasts at them. Next they need to levitate blocks around them, those without Move need to make a Hard Discipline check while those with Move need only Make a Move check with Discipline at Easy. Finally they face floating stun droids and must make a Hard Lightsaber check with a setback due to the number of them, they have Adversary 2, so the difficulty is 1 purple and 2 red dice in addition to the Setback. If the roll is failed suffer 5 strain this can be reduced by Reflect if the Jedi has it but not soak. A Trial point can be earned for each successful skill check.
Trial of Courage: All Jedi taking the current test have proven their courage, each gains 1 Trial Point for having endured and shown their Courage in battle or in facing the Dark Side.
Trial of Flesh: Each padawan is subjected to a painful ordeal, they must endure this Pain with a Discipline check at Average or a Resilience check at Hard, failure on the roll leaves a permanent scar and they suffer 4 wounds not possible to soak. This Test grants 1 Trial Point just for completing it, in addition to success or Fail.
Trial of the Spirit: The padawan must face the darkness within themselves, they begin the test with a Vigilance check at Average with a setback as they face their dark nature. This is followed with a Cool check at Average with a setback to battle their dark nature and try and overcome it. Finally they must make a Discipline check at Hard to come to peace with their nature and realize it is who they are, for good or ill. A Trial point can be earned for each successful skill check.
Trial of Insight: If the padawan has Seek or Sense they gain a free upgrade to the checks made during this trial. To begin they are presented a riddle or situation and must see the truth of things this done with a Perception or Vigilance check at Hard with a setback due to Jedi trickery. Next they must discern the truth through an Education or Lore check at Hard to solve the mystery placed before them. Gain a Trial point for each successful skill check in this Trial.
Rewards/Outcome: If 6 or more Trial Points are gained the player has earned the right to be considered a Jedi Knight by their fellow Jedi, they are no longer padawan and more will be expected of them. They gain the talent below.
Knight Tested, Master Approved: Once per session, Flip a Destiny, may add any non-committed Force dice to any one one roll, using Force pips as Advantage or Success. This talent is considered an Incidental action.

Re: [Day 8 - EM] The Jedi Trials
A Jedi was never alone. And not just because, as he walked into the temple, Petrus was with some of those who were closest to him. But the Force was with him. Was with all of them. A nod to and a smile to each of his fellows, as Petrus gathered the Force around himself, into himself. And they were ready to begin.
(committing to Brawn)
It started out simply enough. Deflecting stun bolts from remote droids while trying to lift blocks was not, truly, different from his normal training. It was only more. Unfortunately, lifting blocks was never something he was good at, especially not being shot. Petrus winced as two circled around him, one bolt striking him... but the next time they fired, he twisted out of the way, and their bolts struck each other.
"Very clever, Petrus Karath." Master Surro said as Petrus extinguished his lightsaber. "Next, comes the Test of Courage."
Petrus took a deep breath. He could feel the fear within himself. Perhaps it would always be with him. Another deep breath, and then he nodded. "I'm ready."
Master Surro nodded. "Then you have already passed, Petrus Karath. Courage is not being without fear. It is acting despite it. This is a lesson you have learned well."
Petrus lowered his head, his eyes closing. "Thank you, Master Surro."
He continued on.
...
The less that is said about the test of pain, the better. But while Petrus was often afraid, pain was never one of his fears. And so while he was pale when he emerged from the chamber, he withstood it stoically. And so he went on, down a darkened corridor.
...
"What are you afraid of, Petrus?" His voice was so clear, he thought he'd spoken aloud.
"Lots, I gue..." Petrus pressed his lips together, stopping the answer before it went any further. He turned towards the voice to find... a mirror. Perfectly smooth, and, as Petrus stepped closer, cold, chilling Petrus, making him shiver. The blue eyes that stared back at him were all too familiar. Do I always look that afraid?
No. Only at my worst. That's what this is.
"What are you afraid of?" Petrus asked the reflection, watching as it lowered its head.
"Of failing." It whispered. "But not... trying and not succeeding. But what if I don't try? What if I let my friends down? What if... I turn against them?" Petrus closed his eyes, knowing that it was right. That was what he feared.
"You won't." He whispered. "Because they believe in you." His eyes flickered open, and the mirror was gone. He took a deep breath. His struggle with fear was not done, would perhaps never be done. But he knew he would not be alone as he faced it.
...
"Very good, Petrus." Came a familiar voice. Petrus turned, his eyes widening. "Master Donos...?"
It was his old Cerean master. Who he'd last seen fighting for survival. No, not for survival. Fighting for Petrus, to give him enough time to escape. "Master, aren't you dead?"
His master gave him a kindly smile. "Am I?"
Petrus' lips parted, then shut. He knew the answer immediately.
"No. Because there is no death. There is the Force."
Master Donos smiled, reaching out. The weathered hand ruffled his hair fondly; a solid touch, the same he'd felt many times before. Petrus closed his eyes, unable to stop a tear from rolling down his cheek.
"Congratulations, my Padawan. Or, should I say, Knight Karath." Petrus opened his eyes. He was alone.
Except a Jedi was never alone.
Taking a deep breath, Petrus smiled as he went to rejoin the others.

Re: [Day 8 - EM] The Jedi Trials
"And also with you master Surro."
Floats squares her shoulders as the doors of the trial chamber open revealing only inky blackness beyond. Then, slowly, the Nautolan steps forward...
And then she's running furiously, vaulting and jumping between precarious floating blocks as small stun droids whirl around her.
Concentrating furiously "I ain't ever skipped leg day before!" And she launches herself off the final block and onto comparatively stable ground ahead, the stun droids left behind.
Day 8 Trials Event, Athletics, average, destiny point, 1 setback: 3eP+1eA+2eD+1eS 5 successes
The next test is more insidious, heavy block lie motionless on the ground while the niches they are meant to fill sit high over head. Clearly a jedi must move them with their connection to the force. So Floats tries....and tries...and tries. But there's no movement whatsoever
"The force is about more than moving rocks you know!" And she laboriously picks up each rock and climbs up to their niches to slot them in manually. It's exhausting and technically a failure, but the door opens ahead anyway.
Day 8 Trial Event, levitate hard discipline: 1eP+3eD 2 failures, 3 threat
Then they're on her, a swam of stun droids firing and whirring from side to side. Floats howls in pain as time and time again they dart just out of range of her lightsaber and then fire into her face (which she was mighty fond of)
"Well I didn't come here just to play nice"
And she launches herself bodily into the swarm, ignoring the stinging pain as she slowly demolishes the droids with saber, fist and foot until panting, she's just left alone with herself.
Day 8 Trial event, lightsaber hard, setback from last roll, upgraded by Dapper, destiny point: 3eP+1eA+3eC+2eS 1 success, 2 threat, 1 Despair
The next room is hazy and silent. No droids, no floating rocks, no floating rock droids, just quiet. There's a quiet murmuring just on the edge of her hearing. Suggestions, please threats. 'It's easier to turn back now, you don't know what's up ahead, how much worse it will be....'
But the Nautolan ignites her saber to drive back the darkness and the haze and presses on.
Which she immediately regrets as a line of stinging pain explodes across her back from shoulder to hip, throwing Floats to the floor as she writhes in agony.
"Ow ow ow ow, always with the electrocution. Always!
Day 8 Trials Event, Resilience at hard: 4eA+3eD 0 successes, 1 advantage
As she lies on the ground, between flashes of excruciating pain, Floats has time for some inner reflection...involuntary inner reflection.
Face down "I mean...Whadda I owe the jedi? Years of lost life? Years of pain. kidnapping children and then sending them off to war without so much as a 'by your leave', that's wrong, ain't it? At least the empire don't do that...."
Wincing as she rolls onto her protesting back, the tiles of the floor digging uncomfortably into her new wound
" 'Course, that would mean my entire life was a waste and I'm doomed to a cursed existence as a former child soldier, which is depressin'"
Sitting up with a grunt of pain
"They were just doing what they thought was right, after all. Sacrificing for the greater good....it ain't right, but at least the intentions were there."
And forcing herself to her feet
"And if I'm worthy to be a knight, I'm worthy to make sure something like that never happens again, worthy to try and change things."
Giving the darkness around her a glare
"I'm doing this for future Floats and Petrus and Verse and Qareme and Xanna, doing it for everyone who had to suffer just because they were kids born special and people were out there doing bad."
And the darkness lifts
The final room seems gigantic, stretching on beyond the limits of sight and fading into a grey distance. Within it sits thousands of boats, all replicas of her own and all apparently identical
"....Huh."
An old Nautolan, his back bent by age and his tentacles hanging limp stands by the door and welcomes her as she enters
"Another to take the test of the boats I see. You must choose yours."
His hand gestures to the room "But...choose wisely."
Floats is frozen in shock for a few moments before her manners kick in "Well thank you Mr Guide, I guess I'll go and do that."
And she starts walking aimlessly between the rows of boats. How was she to know which was hers? They were all the same. It's as though she wonders for hours before it clicks. On one boat the rudder was misaligned by a fraction, on another the engines were a slightly newer make
"These ain't my boat at all!"
Day 8 Trial Event,Perception check, hard, setback from previous roll, destiny spent: 1eP+2eA+3eD+1eS 2 successes, 5 threat
As she utters the words a ferocious gale picks up, a storm at sea which suddenly fills the room with gusting salty air.
"I'm finding my boat, it's a part of me, and you can't come between a girl and her boat now."
And Floats pushes forward into the wind which picks up harder and harder until she's bent low, forcing herself forward with each step a battle of its own. Just as she fills herself giving out, she sees it up ahead, her boat. The perfectly imperfect boat.
She grits her teeth and pushes forward...step....step....step until she lunges forward and slaps a hand down on her boat
"I'm a jedi, I'm here to help those who cannot help themselves, and this here, this is my boat."
The wind seems to scream in agony and there's a final devastating squall which blows the Nautolan off her feet, but she's smiling as everything turns black.
Day 8 Trial Event, Lore check, hard, destiny spent: 1eP+2eA+3eD 2 successes, 4 threat
((6 points for the test and Floats maxes out on strain and passes out on the final roll))

Re: [Day 8 - EM] The Jedi Trials
Trial of Skill:
It was odd; this part of the test was supposed to be her strong suit. She was always good at the physical; had been hitting lots of bad people with her lightsaber, and had even gotten back her connection to the Force. And yet... she wasn't doing as well as she'd have liked. She managed to show that physical prowess to be sure; but making the blocks levitate wasn't happening... nor, apparently, was taking down the stun droids. Oh sure, if she'd be allowed a bit more time she could've handled them, but time was limited in these trials. Her attack failed to connect, though she managed to at least avoid its blast with a well time parry of the blade.
D8: Trial of Skill: Athletics: 1eP+3eA+2eD+1eS 4 successes, 1 threat
D8: Trial of Skill: Hard Discipline: 2eP+1eA+3eD 2 failures, 2 threat
D8: Trial of Skill: Lightsaber hard, extra setback, dapper flip, DESTINY: 3eP+1eA+3eC+2eS 3 failures, 3 advantage
+1 trial point. 3 strain (1 from threat, 3 from reflect, +1 from 1 advantage)
Trial of Courage:
Nobody could deny that Verse, of all people, had courage. Too much perhaps; given how willingly she threw herself into danger. But while it might be ill-advised, it *was* courage. Bravery. More than enough to have earned her a pass.
+1 point (2 total);
Trial of Flesh:
Pain; was something that Verse had gotten accustomed to. There might've even been arguments from the masters that she might've already passed this particular trial when facing down the High Inquisitor. The burns she'd gotten then had mostly faded by now, but they had been hard to miss for weeks. That in mind, when she demonstrated once again that she had the willpower to face the pain of the trial, the masters recognized it straight away, and agreed she had more than passed the trial.
D8: Trial of Flesh, Discipline, Boost from advantage: 2eP+1eA+1eB+2eD 4 successes, 1 threat
+2 trial points (4 total) +1 strain (4 total)
Trial of Spirit:
Facing the Mirror; had she been dreading this? Perhaps more than she'd let on. Entering the deep meditation necessary for the trial to begin, the Force showed her images she could not immediately place. Darkness, everywhere; surrounding her on some dark planet she had never seen before... except she had. It was the place from her memories, perverted somehow, twisted by the whims of the Dark Side. Master Alana was there too, though as far as she could tell her old master had never set foot on Auratera.
"This is not real," Verse said, "the Light can not be extinguished like this. I won't accept it."
"It IS real. We did this," Master Alana said, her face shifting until it resembled an ashen-skinned Verse. "You did this. It's why the Jedi had to take us from that place!"
"No!" Verse lept up to her feet, battling her other self. There was a lightsaber fight!
"You won't get away with this!"
"We already have!"
"No! It's not true!"
The fight continued for some time, but in the end Verse was victorious...
...it was just the wrong Verse. The ashen-skinned Verse stabbed her lightsaber through the real one's gut, who fell to her knees. There was no pain. No injury. Just the laughter of the other Verse as she vanished into nothingness with a few final words.
"Even you, child of Light, even you will fall to the Dark."
She wasn't sure how to take those words, or the taste of defeat. She wasn't shaken up as much as she might've been... it wasn't real. It wasn't true. And she'd kept her calm in the face of it all... but still, she had lost. Lost to the doubt and uncertainty that plagued every sentient's heart. Perhaps in that loss, there was a lesson. It would take time to find it, though.
D8: Trial of Spirit: 3eA+2eD+1eS 1 success
D8: Trial of Spirit Cool: 2eP+2eD+1eS 1 success, 4 threat
D8: Trial of Spirit Discipline, dapper upgrade, DESTINY: 3eP+2eD+1eC 0 successes, 1 advantage
+2 trial points (6 total)
+3 strain (+4 from threat, and healed 1 with advantage: 7 total)
Trial of Insight:
Perhaps nobody was surprised to learn that Verse had no trouble flubbing this trial.
D8: Trial of Insight, Vigilance, Sense Upgrade: 1eP+2eA+3eD+1eS 2 failures, 2 advantage

I *think* that's 6 points total, so pass? I hope.

+1 point (2 total);

Re: [Day 8 - EM] The Jedi Trials
This is it.
Qareme was nervous. It was her second run through, but this time it had two Jedi masters watching over it, and all the other padawans. Well, one Jedi master and one three thousand year old hologram of a Jedi master, but it still counted in her mind.
She had spent much of the early part of the morning meditating on her failure the previous time, and trying to push past that. Her thoughts distracted her enough that she made an immediate mistake trying to outrun the droids, tripping and falling flat on her face. She looked up at the droids, and took a deep breath before levitating the blocks around her, blocking the next wave of shots, which allowed her to roll back up onto her feet. Dodging the next barrage, she realized she was getting herself cornered, and took a moment to think.
Well...Verse copied me. Perhaps I can copy her?
Qareme ran forward, straight past the stun droids and towards the wall, running up it. Shots following past her feet. At the last possible moment she pushed back, jumping and backflipping through the air, her saber cutting through three of the droids and deflecting the final shot at the final droid. She heard a click, and looked ahead, a door opening.
One trial down...
The next room was...empty. At least, that's how it appeared, until Qareme made it to halfway into the room, when the whole room suddenly went dark. Upon each wall it showed a different situation that had happened in Bankor; her fight with the Inquisitor in the Enclave, the Prison escape. Other scenes also played, and a voice spoke through.
"Courage isn't just about being brave. It's about overcoming fear and daring to do what is right for your fellow man" the final scene shows Qareme and Neela by the fire at the funeral, and Qareme smiled. The voice was right, there was much to courage. Not just facing the darkness, but showing kindness.
I hope Neela will be ok. I shall do what I can to help her.
Another click, and Qareme found herself in a cave, trapped by a waterfall of ice. The scene was almost identical to the one she had faced before; the start of the previously failed trial. Her senses told her she needed to push through, but there was moment of doubt. Was she ready to face this trial?
Trust in the Force.
Qareme closed her eyes, and walked slowly through the waterfall of ice. The shards were sharp, digging into her skin, slicing her. She passed through though, and when she opened her eyes she was in the room that her last trial finished in. Unharmed. In the middle of the room was the same box. Qareme felt calmer, and approached the box. Before she could get there though, a crimson saber cut her off, and she moved back quickly.
"Still you cling on to the Light" hissed Dark Qareme, eyes narrowed. The real Qareme, caught in a moment of doubt, took a few steps back.
"You...are wrong I do not cling to the light."
"Then what do you call this weakness? You do not need their approval. Be your own Master, rather than the coward. Why help those who cannot help themselves?"
Qareme closed her eyes, and took a calming breath.
"No. It is not cowardice to stand together. The Darkness may be strong, but together in the light we are stronger.
"You are wrong" she hissed, the dark version of Qareme slowly fading away "the Dark Side is..."
"Defeated." Qareme opened her eyes, and the vision was gone. Instead a woman stood in front of Qareme, a pale one with long blond hair and a white bandage over her eyes. Qaremes eyes opened wide.
"Master Claflem?"
There was a smile.
"My dear Qareme, you're still hiding aren't you?"
"What do you mean, Master? I am where you asked me to be."
"Are you?"
Qareme paused. That was a question she was sure of, but now she was asked it there was a slight doubt. Then it all made sense.
"No, i am not. I am where the Force needs me to be."
Master Cleflem smiled. "That's my girl. Your hardest test is yet to come though."
"What is that, Master?"
"Guiding the others, Jedi Knight Torth." the woman said with a warm smile as she started to fade away "may the Force be with you, my dear Qareme."
"May the Force be with you master" Qareme whispered as the final door opened to the main room. Qareme felt the weight of expectation as she left, but she was ready to carry it.

Re: [Day 8 - EM] The Jedi Trials
After all these years, so much time spent training, everything leading up to this moment. She had been diligent, a good pupil. She had been kind, a decent person. She had learned to fight as well as talk, a reluctant warrior.
All these years, all this training. Still she had this nagging doubt that it was not enough. So she knelt in quiet contemplation until Master Surro's hologram appeared. "It is time Padawan. Please, follow me."
Rising, she nodded and walked with Surro, entering the testing area. The droids began to swarm as the Trial of Skill was explained to her. She quickly navigated the course, avoiding all of the stun blasts quite easily. The damned blocks would not move, no matter what she did. Perhaps that was what triggered the memory of Valus and the exploding shuttle? Watching. Unable to affect the events as they unfolded. Then it was the Aznuri being massacred as she tried to help them. For a moment the droids had Imperial markings and she felt a flash of hatred for that symbol all it represented. Her blade flashed. The droids were easily bisected. Yet it left a bad taste in her mouth even as they moved along to the next trial.
"The Trial of Courage is meant to test a prospective Jedi's willingness to face down uncertain odds, a superior foe, or a situation that might seem hopeless. You have already demonstrated this Xanna Teevou. Master Oraka explained how you saved him, and Jedi Mal. You have endured and we deem that your past actions are sufficient."
The Trial of Flesh. Perhaps they had not fully considered the impact of heat on Pantoran physiology...or perhaps that was the point. Either way, although Xanna was mentally and physically tough, the ordeal left her with severe burns on both forearms. She managed not to cry out but the pain seemed unexpectedly cruel.
Next came the Trial of Spirit, which would test her understanding of her own nature. Facing it was simple enough. She could see her upbringing. The person she would have become. But it melted away as she realised how her compassion for other beings held the hatred for their oppressors at bay. For how long had this been sitting there, beneath the surface? Was every good act just a means of holding the darkness back? So she battled with her hatred. It was an epic inward struggle that left sweat on her brow and a pervasive exhaustion. It tried to kill her friends. Liua, Petrus, Jenna, Sloan. Yet eventually she was triumphant, crushing that aspect of her character. At least, for the time being. Despite her success it was no easy thing to acknowledge that she held this hate within her. Somewhere she could feel the old ghosts of her family estate. Their pleasure. Hatred gave us power, once. We will wait for you, Eleeza...
Finally it was the Trial of Insight. She could not see her way through the riddle, perhaps the lingering pain was too distracting, or perhaps she was just in need of further training in the aspects of mystery and Lore. Rather than drag it out and waste everyone's time she simply acknowledged that no solution was apparent to her.
As she waited for the final decision a vision came to her. It was a middle aged Devaronian woman with white hair and a sardonic expression. "Bout damn time Eleeza. Didn't send you to Bankor just to meet a nice young man and make soup you know. Gonna need more like you in the years ahead. Now. You tell Oraka he's a humourless son of a nerf-herder, but I miss him all the same..."
When the Masters returned she was smiling despite all that had transpired. She had endured much, but she was ready to face whatever came next. Through diplomacy first, with force if necessary. There was no death. There was only the force.

Jedi Master Surro smiled at the Jedi Knights and said, "You have all passed your trials."
She ignited her own lightsaber, it is a brilliant blue, and raised it high, "You are padawan no more, we welcome you Jedi Knights. You are now the Lights in the Darkness, may the burden of Knighthood ground you and steady you. Go with Wisdom, Go with Compassion, but most importantly, Go with the Light."
