Am I Expected? [EM2]

[Daunt]

Daunt approached the checkpoint cowled and as unassuming as a 2-metre muscular Zabrak could be making a bet that whoever might be expecting him had already informed the security. If not, other ways might be attempted later.

[Dapper Dog]

The guards seem to know who they are expecting and he is escorted to a central two by three storm troopers.

Once there the door opens and inside is an Imperial Officer waiting for him with his back to the Zabrak. The officer began, "You must be, Daunt."

"I find this all highly unorthodox but I follow orders, please come in."

The office is large and spacious with a central holo-terminal and a wide desk on side of the room and many hunting and war trophies situated around the chamber. On the desk is a picture of the officer smiling with a woman that looks like Trion.

[Daunt]

Daunt took note of all those things which let some pieces click into their places. He remained detached from the moral context of what he was stepping into and focused on the situation at hand.

"A fellow hunter, I see." It served as a greeting.

[The Inquisitor]

“Indeed,” he said turning to Daunt.

“I find hunting to be good sport, keeps the mind sharp and the skills of survival sharper. There is a certain satisfaction in besting another creature, primal. I find those that lack the stomach for it, to be poorer for it.”

A call came in on the holo and he said, “I believe this is for you.”

The image formed and there was the Inquisitor and he said, “Daunt, your reputation proceeds you.”

[Daunt]

Daunt had nodded to Hrugos' assessment, what the officer had said was hardly controversial in his judgment.

At the image of the Inquisitor, he did not flinch. This had to happen sooner or later.

"This can be a good or a bad thing, depending on the intent. Looks like I have failed at laying low. Or you knew who you were looking for." He added a toothy smile while his eyes remained alert.

“I do my homework, Daunt and I like to be thorough. As long as you comply you don’t have to worry about that witch running the clinic. Now that isn’t a threat, I just like to put my cards on the table and deal with the facts. You need a direction; I can provide that direction and hone you into a weapon a true warrior,” the Inquisitor responded.

“The galaxy is broken, together we can make it whole and fix it.”

[Daunt]

So this is how it was supposed to be. He felt the bite of anger, but it was only expected, even perhaps solicited.

"Now, this no-threat can only work as long as I care about her. For the moment it is true, I admit my sentimentality. But in longer term there must be more to this arrangement." He paused. "Your claims about the galaxy being broken are hard to relate to. I have seen too little of it, and I tend to be sceptical about what I am told about grand plans. Or great potential. I'm a strong warrior, but so far I haven't given much credit to claims about my supernatural powers. I am neither a Jedi nor a witch. So what's this direction you promise?"

He looked straight at the holo.

"Who do you count among the together? Just you and me?"

"I would be your Master and you would be my apprentice, simple," he said.

[Daunt]

"Simple to those who know how it works. What does it entail? Do you yourself have a master, and this is an upward chain?"

[The Inquisitor]

"I serve the Empire, the Emperor," he said flatly.

"Those above me are not your concern, I will train you. You in turn will get stronger."

[Daunt]

"I see." Daunt nodded slowly. He kept asking for a full picture behind this offer. "It's only about training, or also odd jobs?"

"Odd jobs? You are above that now," he said.

[Daunt]

"Forgive my wording. Training tasks then. Does it entail being an Imperial enforcer like you, just junior? I want to know your expectations."

[The Inquisitor]

"You will have resources but no official title, gives you greater freedom to operate," he responded.

[Daunt]

"Then I think it can work." Daunt nodded. "How does it begin, Master?"

[The Inquisitor]

"I need you to learn how to use a more elegant weapon suitable for one of my agents," he said. The hologram glanced to the Captain and said, "See to the details, I need to handle a matter personally."

"Of course Inquisitor," Hrugas responded. He picked up a wooden box from off his table and presented it to Daunt, "This is for you."

[Daunt]

Daunt assessed the size of the box what in itself was puzzling. How a weapon this small could be worthy of him. Nevertheless, he took it and opened without undue delay.

[Dapper Dog]

It's a cylinder of polished metal with black trim, like a hilt with no blade, Hrugos explained, "An antiquated weapon preferred by the Inquisitorius, antiquated but highly dangerous. There are few materials it cannot cut through."

"There is also inside a training droid."

The small orb-like droid about the size of the fist floats out of the box.

[Daunt]

Daunt wrapped his fingers around the hilt and - briefly - closed his eyes. Even he knew what this strange weapon signified, but was it true? Did it feel familiar or alien? Had he had any contact with anything like it before, in those years that he couldn't remember? Had Maul prepared him for this moment? He searched his feelings.
